What’s on my nightstand – Feb ‘09

What's On Your Nightstand

I’m back!  Thank heavens for 5 Minutes for Books and their Tuesday carnivals!  I have missed the kids ones the past two Tuesdays, but I’ve finally finished my latest class so I’m really going to work at keeping up here.

Okay, so what is on my nightstand this month?

Does it look vaguely familiar?

It should.  It’s practically the same as last month.

This last class took most of my reading time in February.

Okay, so here they are one by one:

Les Mis – I’m somewhere between 1/4 and 1/3 of the way through this one, and the Classics Bookclub at 5MFB is next week.  I might make it to the end before Tuesday since I won’t have to read anything for school until then.  I am enjoying the story, but my word…he goes off on a tangent like no other author I’ve ever read.  Don’t tell The Writer, but I skipped all but the last page of the chapter on Waterloo.  I just couldn’t take it.  I’ll have my full review next week.

Star Trek TNG ImzadiAnother one that was here last month, but while I spent a little time with Hugo, this one wasn’t even opened.  It is now third in line after Les Mis and the Thurber book.

The Intellectual Devotional: American History is one that I started last year, but let it drop.  It has daily readings like a typical devotional book, but these are all snippets of American history.  It isn’t divided by specific days (Jan. 1, Jan. 2, etc.) but by non-specific ones (Monday, Week 1, Tuesday, Week 2, etc.), so that if you are uptight about reading on the exact day (like me) you can start on any Monday and be okay.

James Thurber’s My Life and Hard Times is the only new book to make the list this month.  It’s been years since I’ve read any of his work, and it just seemed like a good idea to add this one.  It’s short, and it’s the next book after Les Mis.

The remaining three are permanent fixtures: my NIV Bible, A Year with C. S. Lewis, and Streams in the DesertI finished Leviticus a few nights ago.  It amazes me how long the Pentateuch is.  It will take almost three months to finish it using Biblegateway.com’s chronological daily reading plan.  Both of the devotional books are excellent, but as a Lewis fan, this one is not my favorite.  It’s hard to follow his thoughts in just a few sentences.  I prefer to read the actual books.

What did I read over the past four weeks?  Textbook for school and very little else.  Now I have almost two weeks to enjoy reading for pleasure, and I intend to take full advantage!

You can see what a lot of other bibliophiles are reading at this week’s carnival over at 5 Minutes for Books.

BTW, if you are on Goodreads, add me as a friend…I’d love to see what you’re reading every day!

Tomorrow – a great cookie recipe!

Until later,

I am working my way through Les Mis too.

I loved Les Mis…..but I did NOT read the unabridged version!

I agree with when you said {{he goes off on a tangent like no other author}} in regards to Les Mis. Thus my failed reading attempt.

The Intellectual Devotional: American History This book sounds like a great way to keep in mind our History in short snipets. William Bennett just put out a book similar to this concept.

I am reading through my Chronological Bible and I agree… the Pentateuch is long.

Happy Reading in March!

lol – It’s okay. I skipped about the same amount of the Waterloo section, too. Hugo is big on tangents.

Should finish Leviticus tomorrow!

Are you reading the unabridged Les Miz? I read an abridged version…still over 800 pages…but it cut the Waterloo chapter!

Thanks, Bayl…I felt bad about skipping it, but I did it any way.

Bluestocking, I think we talked about Imzadi last month…I know because my list was practically the same this month as last. :O I have a rather long road trip coming up in March and will be taking this one with me, so it will be read this time around!

Lisa, I am reading the unabridged edition. My thinking is that I will try to skim the tangent areas this time and then read them more thoroughly the next time through. That’s my story, and I’m sticking with it.
